Recovery boiler operation has gone through big changes the last decades. This article summarizes changes from the 1980s until 2018, highlighting reasons for today’s common problems with fouling in precipitators and ducts. Problems that largely influences overall operation of pulp mill recovery boilers, but can be resolved with the right choice of cleaning method or design of ducting and flow pattern.

The article is a compilation of a presentation by Ingalill Samuelsson, senior consultant at ÅF, at the recovery boilers conference Sodahuskonferensen in Stock- holm 2018. Ingalill has long experience in the field of electrostatic precipitators.
